Starting Penalties

What Starting Penalties Does

The Starting Penalties feature lets the race committee enter OCS, UFD, BFD, and other starting penalties from a mobile device immediately after the start. The list appears in real time on a public web page, and each penalized competitor is sent an email and SMS notification. Coaches and team managers can monitor the list while their boats are still racing.

Setup Requirements

Three things must be in place before starting penalties can be used:

  1. Enable Starting Penalties in Event Settings when setting up or editing the event.
  2. The person who will enter penalties on the water must be listed as an official on the event with a role of PRO, CRO, or Race Committee.
  3. Competitors must be imported into RRS.org. Starting penalties cannot be assigned unless the competitor list is already loaded, since penalties are linked to specific boats by sail number.

Entering Penalties On the Water

From the Starting Penalties page in the Event Panel, tap New Penalties. Fill in the course area (optional), division (optional), race number, and penalty type. These fields can be set up before the start so the form is ready to go at the gun.

After the start, type each sail number into the boat search field and select the boat from the list. Add all boats receiving that penalty, then tap Save Penalties. Each penalized competitor is notified immediately by email and SMS.

Scoring Panel Integration

Starting penalties entered through this feature also appear on the Scoring Panel, allowing the scorer and race committee to confirm that each penalty has been correctly applied in the scoring system. The public Starting Penalties page is sorted by course area, division, and race number for easy reference.
