I shared a Rules Seminar, with the focus on Part Two of the RRS, I developed with some of you last fall. I pitched the seminar to 3 groups this winter which included over 100 sailors. As a result input of received, I have hopefully improved the seminar materials to include more diagrams and Presenter's Notes. Here is a link to the seminar materials to which you may download and use.
Included are the Rules Seminar in Word, PDF and PowerPoint format and the Presenter's Notes in Word and PDF. I am sharing the Word format in case you want to change or customize to fit your training needs. You are free to use and modify the seminar materials as you see fit. I ask the club to make a color copy of the handout, Rules Seminar PDF, and give to each participant.
Race officials and judges have required training, but who trains the competitors when is comes to the RRS? I think it is up to all of us.

At two clubs where I sail in Sydney, Australia there is generally a rules presentation at a compulsory skippers briefing at the start of each season. There is generally also a talk by a Boating Safety Offficer from our local Maritime authority partly because our clubs' courses are affected by commuter ferry traffic, large commercial shipping, tourist cruise boats as well as the other general traffic. The concern is more about who is educating all the other sailors and ensuring that all the other boat owners remember the rules. Boats that cannot do more than 10 knots and sail boats do not need any licence or to pass any test.
The gridlines are the default of the software tool, Boat Scenario, I used to create the examples. I poked around in it to see if the gridlines could be changed from diamonds to squares, but that is not an option. Overall Boat Scenario does a pretty good job and you cannot beat the price! One very cool feature is the ability to animate a scenario and save as a .gif to share with others.

JK .. it's a setting you can change. The Boat Scenario program defaults to 40 deg laylines.
